Many Portlanders have a “Naked Bike Ride” encounter to share. It’s inevitable if you’re a city dweller who ventures out on Saturday nights in the summer. The ride is typically a June event around summer solstice, in which only the starting point is announced in advance and the route isn’t shared until riders arrive at the meeting place. First encounters of this event are subtle and start in the late afternoon. Some Portlanders notice scantily clad peeps decorating bikes in their front yards or hanging out in local drinking establishments. Once the parade starts at dusk, it’s quite a sight to see - hundreds of naked, semi-naked and costumed people on bikes, skateboards, scooters, or on foot, with music blaring, lights flashing and horns honking, parading through the streets to celebrate cycling and body positivity.
